Goldfuss in South Africa; from Dennis Kahn

Dennis Kahn mentions Tsipa Goldfuss from Telsiai, Lithuania on his family tree. Abraham Goldberg of Jerusalem had mentioned that his Avrohom Goldfuss was from Telsiai, also.
"Tsipa married Shrago (Faive) Gochin . Her eldest daughter was Sarah who married Sholem Tyskiai (1859-1927), 5th son of Moshe and Reicha, livestock dealer. Tsipa died at age 50. She was a religious woman, loved for her hospitality and kindness." Her husband died at age 68 in PE (Papile).

Minnie (Ita Mina b Shmuel) Goldfuss from Kiev 1878-1955 married Jacob (Yacov, Yehuda, ) from Papile 1873-1938 in 1898. Jacob went to South Africa in 1893.

Council, Idaho Marriages

Nathan Goldfoot and Hattie Jermulowske were married in Council, Idaho on November 20, 1905. Nathan said on the April 1910 census that he had been married for 6 years. (Not quite). Also on the record in Idaho was Hattie's sister, Bessie, who married Samuel Criss on January 17, 1901 in Council, Idaho. Sam Criss and his brother Harry Criss, married to Jenny Jermulowske, and Louis Jermulowske, a brother, all lived in Council, Idaho.
Harriy died in Nampa, Idaho on 1/7/1903, but lived in Council from 1898 to 1910, and was in Weiser , Idaho in 1913, then Nampa, Idaho on 7th Ave and 4th St. ; Sam died in Portland, OR on June 18, 1928, but lived in Council from 1901 to 1923. Louis lived in Council, Idaho in 1910 and in Weiser, Washsington County, Idaho.
I also found a Charles C. Criss who married Sadie Helen Feldman in Boise, Ada County, Idaho on Aug 20, 1922. This is cousin Charlie, their son.
They were listed as M. Goldfoot and Addie Jarmulosky; and Bessie Yermntopp.
Sam and Harry had many land dealings in Council, Idaho. They went there when the train went there as peddlers with packs on their backs, and eventually had their own store. At first they traded for food. They bought land, and owned the main part of Council at one time. I went there earlier this year and found many records in the county office.
Hattie bore her first child, Charles, in Council, Idaho. She returned to Portland and her husband with bags, a baby, and a canary in a cage on the train.

Michael Goldfuss in Jaslo, Poland

Michael Goldfuss (21) name was found in Jaslo, Poland by Dr. Jakub Herzig. This was a part of Austrian Galica, and Jews were not allowed to live there, only in surrounding towns. After 1867 they were able to live there.

Goldfuss in Krakow Synagogue, Poland

Goldfuss was on the Surname List extracted from a Krakow Synagogue of Marriage and Banns Registered from the Jewish Historical Institute on 6 May 2001. They listed the bride, groom and mother's maiden name. Goldfuss was a lone entry, perhaps the bride.

Con't Tree from Dennis Kahn

Fiver and Tsipa were born, married and lived in Lithuania. However, in the article by Phyllis Sachar she quotes her father Samuel BERGMAN that his family lived in Riga.
Fiver came from Papile and Tsipa from Telsiai. It is almost certain that Fiver and most probable that Tsipa also died in Papile. The Lithuanian State Historical Archives has no records of the Jewish community of Papile and can find nothing in the birth, marriage and death records of Telsiai Jewish community concerning Fiver and Tsipa. However, the Lithuanian appendix contains a long list of persons in Telsiai named GOLDFUSS, plus information from Mike Posnick about seven other GOLDFUSS/GOLDFUS generations and from Abraham Goldberg about GOLDFUSS/GOLDFOOT.

Goldfuss on Family Tree of Dennis Kahn

Joseph BERGMAN was born in Lithuania, probably in Papile in 1876. He was the fifth child of Fiver GOCHIN and Tsipa GOLDFUSS. He only lived a short period in South Africa. In 1903 he married his niece Lena in Uitenhage. From 1904 onwards he farmed with his two brothers in the Uitenhage district. Four years later he died of pneumonia at the age of 32. He is buried in Port Elizabeth.

Records in Mead Street Shul

I wrote to the Rabbi and Sura Rubenstein about accessing the records in the Mead Street Shul on 8/26/04. There are big record books in the office that I have seen that may hold records of marriages, deaths, births, etc. I need the marriage records of Nathan Goldfoot and Hattie Jermulowske. Also, Nathan was married before without children. I don't know where, but Hattie knew the wife.
8/23/06 I have since discovered that my grandparents were married in Council, Idaho, and were listed in the Idaho Historical Society. Their names were badly misspelled. They were there with Hattie's sisters who had married Harry and Sam, merchants, and her brother Louis. After their first son Charles was born, they moved to Portland, Oregon. The record of his death and burial should be in the synagogue.

Abraham Goldberg in Jerusalem to Milton Levenfeld

"My maternal great grandfather lived in Telsiai 100+ years ago and had a first cousin Avrohom Goldfuss. He seems to be the father of a veritable tribe. Your GOLDFUSS of Telsiai data is one of the most direct relevance to me and I believe that "my" Avrohom and some of his family are included in the list you received from the Lithuanian State Historical Archives. Avrohom had a number of children, one of whom was Zalman married to a Chaya Faige Frijohn. He (and other siblings( moved to Dublin, Ireland, probably early this century, and changed his name to GOLDFOOT. Around 1870 his wife gave birth to twin girls, Hinde, who married a Henry Myerson, and Tsipa married a Joseph Karnovsky. I wonder whether/how this Tsipa was related to your Tsipa, who married Fiver Gochin. Is there any way we can find the link between our two Telsiai families of the 19th century? "

1998 Message from Mike Posnick

From same information of Lithuania family tree: "An analysis of the list of records sent to Dennis suggests that they relate to as many as 7 Goldfuss generations, including the following individuals (yr of b, d, guesses based on information from several sources."
1. Abram ben ? Goldfuss b: ca 1750 d: ca 1825
2. Yankel ben Abram Goldfuss b: ca 1775 d: ca 1867
3. Josel ben Yankel Goldfuss b: ca 1800 d: ca 1880
4. Abram ben Yosel Goldfuss b: ca 1825 d: ca 1895m Ginda ?
5. Chana-Pera abat Abram Goldfuss b: ca 1850, d: ca 1925 m: David ben Yankel-Chaim Aizikovicz
1. Movsha ben Yosel Goldfuss b: ca 1835 d: ca 1877 m: Beila ?
2. Boruch ben Movsha Goldfuss b: ca 1870 m: Itta
3. Voolf ben Boruch Goldfuss b: ca 1890 m: Chana
4. Srol ben Voolf Goldfuss b: ca 1910

"I believe that Abram ben Yosel Goldfuss is the relative that Abraham Goldfberg is looking for because he had a daughter named Chana-Pera. I don't see a direct connection to my Laukava Goldfus family; I ssee a similarity in male and female naming patterns that suggests the existence of a connection."

Shtetl Links "goldfus" Jews in Ulanow(Izzak Goldfus, Lawer)

I found a possible Shtetl, which is Ulanow, a shtetl of Lazdijai/Lazdei, Lithuania. It's now in SE Poland. Oral history has mentioned Lazdijai, but I thought it was for Jermulowske. I found on page 2 Izzak Goldfus, a lawyer there. He was listed as one fo the highly educated Jews there.

Ship for Jermulowske's USA Arrival

David suggested that Hattie Jermulowske and siblings may have come over on the "Antwerpen" instead of the "Altverten" that was written on her Declaration of Intention. I wrote a letter asking for a Petition for Naturalization today from Multnomah County. I asked NARA first, but they said the records would be at Mult. Co.

2003 Notes from Mike Posnick

Suwalki is a Polish spelling. Jews who lived in Latvia and Suwalki were both Litvaks. Suwalki passed between Lithiuania and Poland under Russian rule. What town in Suwalki did she (Hattie Jermulowske Goldfoot) come from? There were also Goldfus families from Suwalki.
1. Look for Petition for Naturalization with state court where Declaration of Intention came form.
2. Go to US district Court for district of Oregon. Go to NARA for any resgustrations under Alien Registration Act.
3. Get a copy of her original SS 5 from Social Security Ad (write to local SSA office)

1999 Files of Dublin, Ireland Goldfoot

Abraham Goldberg: He was in London March 7th and visited the public record office in Kew and found original files of Goldfoot ancestors who lived in Dublin earlier this century. These included Solomon "Zalman" and Hyman his brother "Chaim".
He also found 2 Telshe, Lithiuania birth Goldfoots. One was Abraham Henry who lived in Dublin and was a dentist in Cork, and Isaac who lived in Brymawr, South Wales. Both were the sons of Samson and Sarah Rebecca Goldfoot of Telshe. AH had a son Jacob and Isaac had sons Samuel and Arthur.
(my comment): These look like the Goldfoots on Stanley Goldfoot's tree.
Later, he learned that Chaim "Hyman" of Dublin was one of a number of children of Avrohom Goldfus of Telshe who turned out to be his maternal great grandfather's first cousin.
UK Naturalization application form data have their date of birth, when they arrived in the UK, their addresses in UK, parents, etc.. (I mailed him a copy of the handmade tree of Stanley).

Goldfus: Ports of Philadelphia and Baltimore

1999 Abraham Goldberg: Most of his Goldfus/foot family came through these ports. He states that there is a Nathan B. Goldfoot in some record. My Nathan Goldfoot emigrated at about the same time as other Goldfoot/fus relatives and could have followed the same route. The passenger manifest is important to find. (Nat'l Archives could not find him again, not enough information).

Pre 1980 Telshi, Korvno Goldfoot Family

This is Stanley Goldfoot's tree given to my brother David when he met a Dr. Goldfoot in England. He then gave it to me. He was born ca. 1918. His 2nd wife is Helen. They both have children from their first marriages. Jessie Goldfoot was the genealogist.
It starts with Goldfoot, a wealthy corn merchant in Russia (Telshi, Korvno June 7, 1862. This was a respected family who was allowed freedom of movement in and out of Russia. )( I wrote in notes that it was Sampson and Sarah Rebecca). The sons were exempted from military service. He had 3 sons; Isaac, Abraham, and another son. Isaac married Anne Spiro. He was a dentist and went to Brymaur, South Wales. Abraham married his cousin, Bella Robinson. He was a dentist in Cork, Ireland. The unknown son went to Whitehaven and became a dentist. Abraham had 4 children; Moseley, a doctor, George, a doctor and dentist who never married, Jack, a dentist, and Jessie who married her cousin Barney. Jessie and Barney had a son Derek, who was alive at the time this tree was made. Derek married Sybil. He was a doctor. Barney was a part of the Irish contingent: They were Hinde and Zippa, twin sisters, Simon, who was the father of Stanley Goldfoot, Louis, a dentist, and Barney. Stanley's siblings were Flo and Kathleen. Stanley was and still is very active in Israel. He was chief of intelligence in the Stern Group and was said to be responsible for the famous blowing up of the Hotel King David. Flo and Kathleen and Stanley were also alive at the time this tree was made.
Isaac and Anne Spiro had 3 children; Sam, Arthur, and an unknown daughter. Sam married Annette and Sam was still alive at the time, Arthur was a dentist and he married Jessie. Sam and Annette had a son Geoffrey who was still alive.
Other related Goldfoot: Abie who was a doctor, Solly who was a doctor, Nadia who married Shllomo or Solomon, and Jenny.
South African Settlers were Simon, Barney, Louis, Solly, Nadia and Jenny. Also cousin Ian and possibly Simon was the father, and from Louis was Nadine Grace.
"Simon's daughter Flo married an uncle of mine in South Africa. She is a cousin of my husband Derek. I suppose this makes Derek miy uncle-in-law...and it makes me his 2nd cousin-in-law. " Words of the Goldfoot tree maker on back of the tree.
In Canada: Sam Goldfoot-brother to Rene who is Derek's cousin--lives at Vinei Crescent Toronto/Montreal, Canada.
From Wales: Rene-Jessie-Sam (related to Sam Goldfoot of Canada, Jessie and a daughter.
On the back I had notes of Yikiel connected to David, Samuel Moses of Bloomfountain, South Africa, and Leib.
Stanley Goldfoot's father was Simon, and he may have been from Bloomfountain, S. Africa.

Major Dan Goldfus of Israel

IDF MAJOR TO SPEAK AT EISENBERG HOUSE - WEDNESDAY, 5/5

The Israel Kesher Committee of Temple Aliyah and New England Region Friends of the Israel Defense Forces are very pleased to invite you to a discussion with Major Dan Goldfus. Major Goldfus commanded the force that took over the Karin A ship that was smuggling arms to the Palestinian Authority, thwarting what could have been a very deadly terror attack in Israel. He is currently studying at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Major Goldfus will tell the story of the Karin A capture. He will address the moral dilemmas and survival techniques he and his soldiers face in their day-to-day service in the IDF. You will gain a perspective of current affairs in Israel that you are not likely to hear about on the news or from coverage of political meetings here and abroad. He is a dynamic individual who is dedicated to his work and to the future of Israel.
The meeting will take place at the home of Ronni and Amos Eisenberg, 56 Canavan Circle, Needham, on Wednesday, May 5 at 7:30 pm.
As this meeting was planned on short notice to accommodate Major Goldfus’ schedule, we need to know if you will attend and if you are planning to bring a friend. (If there is a large response, the discussion will be moved to Temple Aliyah—and we will advise you). RSVP by May 3 by phone (781-444-6059—please leave your number in the message) or by email

National Archives Ship Information

I am sending for information from the National Archives today, 8/13/04, on my Grandmother Hattie Jermulowske Goldfoot and for her husband, Nathan Goldfoot. I have her Declaration of Intention, which tells the name of the ship, Altverten, and the port, New York, as well as where she was from, which was Zuwalta, Russia, or Suwalki, Russia/Poland. The Intention lists her as "Addie" and we called her "Hattie". I could not find her ship, Altverten, which came from Hamburg, Germany. She came over on or about the 6th day of May, 1903. She was born on January 11, 1886. I don't know when she married Nathan. I cannot find this information in the Oregon marriage records.

Laukuva, Lithuania

M.P. answered that Laukuva is located at the intersection of the road from Kaunas to Memel and the road from Taurage to Riga, Latvia. It is just north of Silale. This is where some Goldfus people were living. I could not find it on the map.

England Meeting of Goldfoots

David Goldfoot, PhD. was on vacation in England after having gone to Holland to set up a Primate Center, and met with another Dr. Goldfoot. The English Goldfoot had David and his wife over for dinner. His wife was an opera singer, and also was a lovely hostess with a great dinner. They had no sons and were so happy to hear that David had two. Later, David heard that the English doctor was quite ill. This came from my mother, Mildred Goldfoot's retelling of the story today.

Abraham Goldberg wrote that his maternal great grandfather lived in Telsiai 100+ years ago and had a first cousin Avrohom Goldfuss. He seems to be the father of a vertitable tribe. Avrohom had a number of children, one of whom was Zalman m: Chaya Faige Frijohn. He and other siblings moved to Dublin, Ireland and changed his name to Goldfoot.

So my name must have been originally, "Goldfuss," and Nathan must have changed it when he went to England to Goldfoot. We also have an Avraham in our family as Nathan's first boy child was named Avraham, and then he died as an infant.

Oral History of Nathan Goldfoot

The oral history of my grandfather is that he was accompanied by one or two brothers from "Russia"? to England. He left his brother or brothers in England and came to America alone. This causes me to think that we are connected to Goldfoot in England. That's why I think we are connected to Stanley Goldfoot.

Morris Goldfoot and Werner Oster

I just found a newspaper article from July 6, 1949 from Walla Walla, WA in the Union bulletin about my father, Morris Goldfoot and Warren (Werner) Oster and the veal business. Morris later changed his first name's spelling to Maurice. The news came from Portland, OR.

Goldfus from Leukova, Lithuania

This is from Haim Goldfus in Jerusalem. I am very interested in them since my g. grandfather was Chaim Itsak Goldfoot. The Goldfoot may have been changed from Goldfus when he went to England. Goldfus is Yiddish for Goldfoot, I believe.

"There are 2 Haim (Chaim) Goldfus in Jerusalem and we are cousins. I'm teaching classical archaeology and he is an insurance agent. We are both called after our grandfatherHaim Goldfus from Leukova, Lithunia. According to my father all the Godfuses are conected and they are all from Lithunia. I know there are also Goldfuses who are not Jewish"

He was the son of Samson and Sarah Rebecca Goldfus. Samson had a brother Abraham who was Abraham Goldberg’s maternal ggf’s Tesiai contemporary and first cousin, and that’s what originally generated his personal Goldfoot interest. Stanley Goldfoot in Jerusalem

A new e-mail tells me that Stanley is still living in Jerusalem. "As far as I know Stanley Goldfoot is still alive and still trying to charge up Mount Moriah to re-establish the Temple. Most people there wish to distance themselves from him and his group."Mike

Stanley Goldfoot in Israel

I lived in Israel from 1980 to the end of 1985 and was able to meet my "cousin" Stanley Goldfoot. He is a very well-known person and lives in Jerusalem. He is written about in the book "Genesis 1948" by Dan Kurzman. Stanley's family originally came from Telsiai, Lithuania, and moved to Ireland. From Ireland they moved to South Africa. Stanley moved to Israel when he was 18 years old after completing a private high school. He was approached by a group of freedom fighters called the Stern Group and joined since the ship he had arrived on had put up the swastika flag in the middle of the ocean. He became the chief of intelligence for the group.

I met him at a hotel. He could tell who I was before we met. We kept in contact, even though I lived in Safed, and I had dinner with Stanley and his lovely wife Helen several times. He was tall and slender and good looking and had a terrific English accent.

He has been to the states many times and has spoken about Israel to huge crowds of people in stadiums. He spoke about starting the 3rd temple, which he was very much involved in. I feel very fortunate to have been able to meet such a fantastic person. I hope to learn of our connection some day.

Nathan Goldfoot, my Grandfather

My grandfather, Nathan Goldfoot, was born August 15, 1874 in possibly Telsiai, Lithuania/Russia. He married Hattie Jermulowske on November 1905 in Council, Idaho. Her sisters had married Sam and Harry Criss and they were living there. Before that, the Jermulowske sisters were living in a little mining town of Cuprum, Idaho, not far from Council. Then Nathan and Hattie moved to Portland. He died July 19, 1912 in Portland, Oregon at St. Vincent's Hospital. He had an accident with his horse and wagon. The horse had run away and he was thrown out and hit his head. He did not regain consiousness. His wife said she was not told about the accident or where he was until he had died. He hid his money, being afraid of banks, and she never learned where the money was. He left three small children and one on the way. She did not speak English.

Nathan's father is listed as Chaim Itsak Goldfoot on his tombstone. It is thought that all Goldfoots are connected, and that we must be connected to the Telsiai Goldfoot/Goldfus family.

Samuel Goldfoot

I found Samuel Goldfoot in Immigration Records (1925-1935) of Canada. He was 37 and from Irish Free State and arrived 1927/05/06. Port of arrival was Quebec, Canada on ship MINNEDOSA, Canadian Pacific. Reference RG7i6-Immigration, series C01a, volume 1927 volume 3 page 101 microfilm reel T-13731.

According to Mike Posnik, researcher, he's probably part of the family from Telsiai, Lithuania who settled in Ireland in the late 1800's. This would be part of Stanley Goldfoot's branch that I cannot connect to as yet.
